This 2-part training will explore the basics of setting up and running a summer curriculum for School-Age programs. Where Do We Go From Here? Using Child Assessment Data to Inform Curriculum
This two-part professional development series supports early childhood educators in strengthening assessment practices and effectively connecting assessment to curriculum. Participants will learn practical strategies for collecting high-quality documentation using multiple methods aligned with best practices.

New! Self-Paced PD Offering
A Child Centered Approach to Toilet Learning
This course reviews the required concept of teaching children to use the bathroom in a developmentally appropriate way in both center-based programs and family child care homes. This training will provide an overview of the Rhode Island Child Care and Family Child Care licensing regulations for toileting policies and procedures. It will cover strategies for supporting children and families in this process and resources for implementing practices with all children.

PD Updates
- Providers should now upload their mandatory CPR/First Aid certification to RISES, where they will automatically receive up to three (3) professional development hours. These hours will count towards the required PD hours for that year. Do not submit any CPR/First Aid certifications to the CELP External PD Verification portal.
- External PD, that is not from ProSolutions and not from CELP is only uploaded through your CELP account through the External Verification Process. You can find additional guidance HERE [center-elp.org] and:
TA Updates
- You can request free technical assistance (TA) for your program from CELP. This is available to centers, preschools and family child care providers looking to improve the quality of the care and education they offer or looking to increase their BrightStars rating. Get started today!
New! News from DHS Comprehensive Background Check Reminders
Dear Valued Providers,
We hope you are enjoying the spring weather! Thank you for your continued commitment to providing child care to the families of Rhode Island. DHS would like to share important reminders regarding background check requirements. Please review the information below carefully.
Comprehensive fingerprint-based background checks are required for all child care staff who are onsite while children are present, regardless of whether they provide direct care or supervision. This requirement also applies to volunteers, family child care providers, assistants, and household members over the age of 18. Comprehensive checks include:
- Local and national criminal background checks
- Local and national sex offender registry checks
- Child abuse and neglect registry checks
- Out-of-state child abuse and neglect registry checks are required for any individual in the roles listed above who has lived outside of Rhode Island within the past five (5) years. Please refer to the guidance document at the bottom of this page for additional information on who requires these checks and how to obtain them.
DHS is currently reviewing background checks submitted through the new RISES platform. Once reviewed, you will receive notification indicating whether the submission has been approved or rejected. Background checks may be rejected for the following reasons:
- The background check is expired;
- The individual indicated they have lived outside Rhode Island within the last five years;
- An incorrect form was uploaded;
- The uploaded document does not meet comprehensive background check requirements;
- A required section of the background check is blank;
- Examples of acceptable documents can be found on the DHS website: DHS Background Check Requirements
For rejected DCYF checks:
- Please do not contact DCYF directly to request copies of previously completed checks.
- If you do not have a copy of a recent DCYF clearance, or if DHS does not have a copy on file for family child care providers, a new request must be submitted through DCYF.
- Additional information regarding the DCYF clearance request process can be found here: DCYF Clearance Request Portal
For rejected criminal background checks:
- If you have not completed a comprehensive fingerprint-based background check through the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office within the last five years, you must complete an updated check.
- The Attorney General’s Office now offers appointments for fingerprinting services. Walk in services also remain available.
- For more information or to schedule an appointment, please visit RI Attorney General Background Checks
- Information on scheduling an appointment can be found in the FAQ section under “Do I need an appointment”
- Family child care providers who believe DHS may already have a copy of their most recent fingerprint results should email the DHS Child Care Licensing email to request a copy.
- When requesting fingerprint checks, please ensure you are using the correct fingerprint affidavit available on DHS Background Check Requirements .
- When completing this form, please also include a personal email address so results are sent to:
- You directly; and
- Your program (for child care centers)
- DHS (for family child care providers)
Please be aware that:
- Failure to ensure that all required individuals have current and accessible background checks in RISES will result in high-risk noncompliance findings during monitoring visits and/or may delay license renewal approval.
- Any staff identified during a monitoring visit as missing required background checks will be required to leave the program immediately and may not return until the required documentation has been uploaded into RISES and approved by DHS. This may result in temporary classroom or program closures until compliance is achieved.

News from DHS: Interviews with Family Child Care Providers
Education Development Center (EDC) and Rhode Island’s Department of Human Services (DHS) are partnering on a research study to learn more about family child care providers’ experiences with managing their program, interacting with the families they serve, and using professional development supports.
As part of this study, we plan to conduct virtual one-on-one interviews with licensed Rhode Island family child care providers. You are eligible to participate in an interview if you manage a licensed family child care program, whether or not you currently participate in CCAP. Interviews will take place over Zoom and will be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you. Interviews can be conducted in English or Spanish. Each provider who participates in an interview will receive a $50 gift card. Your participation is confidential – we will not share any identifying information with DHS.
Interviews are already underway and we are grateful for the providers who have already participated! We are looking for additional providers to sign up for interviews to ensure we have a fuller understanding of family child care providers’ experiences in Rhode Island.

News from RIDE: 2026-2027 RI Pre-K Lottery is Now Open!
RI Pre-K, entering its 18th year, provides free, high-quality Pre-K education to eligible 4-year-old children. This year, RI Pre-K is in 20 communities and serves over 2,800 children.
Families in participating communities with children who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2026, can apply here.

Save the Date for WEPA
Mark your calendars: ESF-RI’s annual conference, the We Empower Providers Assembly (WEPA), will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026. It will take place at the Providence Marriott Downtown, 1 Orms Street, from 10:30am – 2:30pm (registration at 9:30am).
Their theme this year is Connection Through Storytelling. We’re creating an event that honors and amplifies the voices of our family child care educators – celebrating their journeys, experiences, and impact – while strengthening our community and deepening the relationships that bring us together.

El equipo de una persona debe trabajar como una red cohesiva, confiable y terapéutica. La desconfianza, los prejuicios, la frustración, la falta de comunicación, las normas culturales, las expectativas opuestas y el trauma pueden influir en el enfoque de los miembros del equipo. Estas influencias a menudo conducen a fallos en la comunicación y pueden afectar negativamente al individuo con Autismo como resultado. - Los proveedores ahora deben cargar su certificación obligatoria de RCP/Primeros Auxilios en RISES, donde recibirán automáticamente hasta tres (3) horas de desarrollo profesional. Estas horas contarán para cumplir con las horas de desarrollo profesional requeridas para el año en curso. No envíe ninguna certificación de RCP/Primeros Auxilios al portal de Verificación Externa de Desarrollo Profesional de CELP.
- El desarrollo profesional externo —es decir, aquel que no proviene de ProSolutions ni de CELP— solo debe cargarse a través de su cuenta de CELP mediante el Proceso de Verificación Externa. Puede encontrar orientación adicional AQUÍ y en los siguientes enlaces:

¡Nuevo! Recordatorios completos de verificación de antecedentes
Estimados y valorados proveedores,
¡Esperamos que estés disfrutando del tiempo primaveral! Gracias por su compromiso continuo de proporcionar cuidado infantil a las familias de Rhode Island. El DHS desea compartir recordatorios importantes sobre los requisitos de verificación de antecedentes. Por favor, revisa detenidamente la información que aparece a continuación.
Se requieren verificaciones completas de antecedentes basadas en huellas dactilares para todo el personal de cuidado infantil que esté en el lugar mientras los niños están presentes, independientemente de si proporcionan atención directa o supervisión. Este requisito también se aplica a voluntarios, cuidadores de familias infantiles, asistentes y miembros del hogar mayores de 18 años. Las comprobaciones exhaustivas incluyen:
- Comprobaciones de antecedentes penales locales y nacionales
- Comprobaciones locales y nacionales del registro de delincuentes sexuales
- Comprobaciones del registro de abuso y negligencia infantil
- Se requieren comprobaciones del registro de abuso y negligencia infantil fuera del estado para cualquier persona en los puestos mencionados anteriormente que haya vivido fuera de Rhode Island en los últimos cinco (5) años. El DHS está revisando actualmente las verificaciones de antecedentes presentadas a través de la nueva plataforma RISES. - La persona indicó que ha vivido fuera de Rhode Island en los últimos cinco años;

- Una sección obligatoria de la verificación de antecedentes está en blanco;

Para cheques DCYF rechazados:
- Por favor, no contacte directamente con DCYF para solicitar copias de los chequeos previamente completados.
- Si no tienes una copia de una autorización reciente del DCYF, o si el DHS no tiene una copia registrada para los proveedores de cuidado infantil familiar, debe presentar una nueva solicitud a través del DCYF.

Para comprobaciones de antecedentes penales rechazadas:

Noticias de RIDE: ¡El sorteo de RI Pre-K para 2026-2027 está abierto!
RI Pre-K, que entra en su 18 año, ofrece educación preescolar gratuita y de alta calidad a niños elegibles de 4 años de edad. Este año, RI Pre-K está presente en 20 comunidades y atiende a más de 2,800 niños.
