The Spring CELP PD calendar is filled with many new and engaging courses for all. Courses start as early as April 24th, but don’t wait. Register now!

New PD Alert

Register to participate in our third course from the new year-long social-emotional learning (SEL) training suite:

A Foundation for Success: Growing Independence and Identity in Preschoolers
The course, the third in the Foundation for Success year-long series, will provide educators with an understanding of children’s development of self-awareness, competence, and confidence. Educators will learn strategies to support preschool children in developing their identity and skills related to independence within their classroom communities.

Using Intentional Language with Young Children to Support Emotional and Academic Development
The language we use with children significantly impacts their emotional and academic engagement, both in school and in daily life. In this training, participants will explore verbal and nonverbal communication, common language patterns used with both children and adults and explore strategies for improving intentional language strategies in the classroom. This series will be facilitated by Chrissy Johansen, an educational consultant.

Little Hearts, Big Emotions: Nurturing Emotional Literacy in Infants and Toddlers
Infants and toddlers experience big emotions, and learning to understand and express those feelings is a key part of early development. This engaging virtual series equips child care providers with tools to support emotional growth in young children.

Autism Series: Practical Strategies for Learning and Success
Join the Autism Project for a new three-part series on practical teaching strategies that support children’s learning and success in the classroom. This series is intended for those participants who have already taken introductory training about autism. Participants will learn about teaching practices related to communication, visual supports, and structured teaching.

Using Picture Books to Support Social and Emotional Learning and Beyond
Children’s books can be used to teach all of the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS). This series will focus on how participants can choose and use high-quality picture books to support children in the following areas: Social and Emotional Development, Cognitive Development, and Language Development.

Learn the Signs Act Early Training
The Learn the Signs. Act Early. program from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourages parents and providers to learn the signs of healthy development from birth to 5 years old, monitor every child’s early development, and take action when there is a concern. In this overview session, participants will receive free Learn The Signs. Act Early. (LTSAE) materials such as children’s board books and posters and will learn how to use them to support early childhood developmental monitoring and screening. The materials will be available in English and Spanish.

School-Age Educators

Using the SACERS-U to Improve Program Quality
This two-part series will provide school-age educators with an overview of the components of the School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale (SACERS-U) tool. Participants will build their understanding of key concepts, terms, and definitions in the tool, discuss strategies to prepare for a BrightStars SACERS assessment within their program, and ways to use the tool for program self-assessment and continuous quality improvement.

New! News from DHS
RISES Release 2 Update March 20

Dear Valued Center-Based providers,

Thank you to all of you who have begun accessing the new licensing system of record housed in RISES. As valued partners in this work, you are helping us identify ways to fix and improve the system, even within the first few weeks of launch. We appreciate each and every one of you and the feedback you have provided.

We are aware that any center based programs who offer preschool/pre-k have had that total capacity doubled in the system. We have included an example below. We are actively working with our vendor to address this. As you know from previous licenses, we did not capture preschool (3-5 year olds) and pre-k (4-5 year olds) separately in our old system. DHS believes this breakdown is helpful from a data standpoint so we do want to capture it. Once the duplication has been corrected, we will let you know.

Once this is resolved, please submit a ticket in RISES that provides us with the breakdown of your capacity of preschool children and your capacity of pre-k children if you separate these age groups in different classroom. We will be able to make these updates for you in the system.

It cannot be said enough how much we appreciate your patience and support as we move forward with this system. Already, our team is seeing improvements in the time it takes to review renewals as well as looking at your staff in the system. We can’t wait to see how this system continues to grow and work for us all over the next few months.

As always, reach out with any questions you might have!

Sincerely,
Nicole Chiello
Assistant Director – Office of Child Care

Atentamente,
Nicole Chiello
Subdirectora – Oficina de Cuidado Infantil
