This two-hour professional development session provides participants with an understanding of children’s behavior as a form of communication. Participants will explore common factors
that influence behavior, including developmental abilities, communication challenges, sensory needs, environmental conditions, relationships, and routines. Through discussion, case
studies, and interactive activities, participants will learn to use the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) framework to observe and describe behavior objectively, recognize patterns, consider
possible functions of behavior, and avoid judgmental labels. Participants will also identify developmentally appropriate prevention strategies, replacement skills, and supportive
responses that promote children’s safety, emotional regulation, participation, and success in early childhood settings.
