This multi-session series presents an overview of ways to support social studies in early childhood classrooms. Participants will explore the updates to the social studies component of the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS) and learn how to design curriculum that supports children’s understanding of civics and government, economics, geography, and history. Social studies learning provides young children with a guide on how to navigate the growing diversity in the world.

Participants who complete the series will:

  • Understand social studies development in children from birth to preschool
  • Identify best practices that support all RIELDS social studies standards
  • Integrate social studies learning opportunities into current curriculum and teaching strategies
  • Engage in discussion around the connection between social studies learning and diversity.

Participants can earn up to 10  PD hours by attending the three in-person sessions and completing three online assignments.
