For the 2019–20 school year, the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) has identified Conscious Discipline as the primary focus for professional development for the Pre-K community. Conscious Discipline is an evidence-based approach for creating compassionate classroom cultures. It promotes a shift in adult understanding of behavior that focuses on the science of brain development. Conscious Discipline promotes the idea that adults’ role is to support the development of self-discipline in children rather than applying discipline to children. It teaches specific brain-friendly strategies for responding to each child’s individual needs with wisdom. Research has shown that this highly effective approach increases self-regulation, sense of safety, connection, empathy, and intrinsic motivation in both children and adults.
